Orlando Theme Park FAQs
Your most-asked questions about Orlando’s theme parks—timing, tickets, park hopping, what’s free, accessibility, and more—answered in one place.
What’s the best time of year to visit Orlando if you want to see the theme parks?
The best times for low crowds and good weather are late August and September, or mid-January through February (avoiding holidays). Early December is also a great time to see holiday decorations with fewer crowds.
Which is better: Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando?
Walt Disney World is better for you if you have younger children or want classic, nostalgic magic, with storytelling, character-driven rides, and immersive worlds. It is massive and requires more planning. Universal Orlando is better for you if you have teens, pre-teens, or are an adult who loves thrill rides—Universal is the “Coaster Capital” of Orlando.
How many days do I really need to explore Walt Disney World?
You will need five to seven days to explore Walt Disney World. This gives you one full day for each of the four main parks—Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom—plus a rest day or a water park day.
How many days will I need to explore Universal Orlando?
With the opening of Epic Universe in 2025, you need at least three full days to see Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe. Add a fourth day for the Volcano Bay water park.
What is a “Park Hopper” or “Park-to-Park” ticket?
These are ticket upgrades that let you visit multiple parks on the same day. Disney’s Park Hopper enables you to hop to another Disney park after 2:00 PM. Universal’s Park-to-Park ticket lets you go between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure all day and is required to ride the Hogwarts Express between the two Harry Potter lands.
How much do tickets cost?
All major Orlando theme parks use dynamic, date-based pricing. Tickets cost more on peak days—weekends, holidays, and summer—and less on off-peak days such as weekdays in September. Always buy your tickets online in advance because the gate price is almost always higher.
Can I bring my own food and water into the parks?
At Walt Disney World, you may bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks; however, glass containers and hard-sided coolers are prohibited, while soft-sided coolers are permitted. At Universal Orlando, you may bring small, pre-packaged snacks, baby food, and up to two liters of water per person, but full meals and large coolers are not allowed. At SeaWorld Orlando, outside food and drinks are not permitted, except for bottled water, baby food or formula, and items required for medical or special dietary needs.
What is free at Orlando’s theme parks?
You can get a free cup of iced water at any quick-service restaurant in every Orlando theme park. At Walt Disney World, transportation on buses, boats, the monorail, and the Skyliner gondolas is complimentary for all guests, regardless of whether they are staying at a Disney hotel. In all parks, parades, fireworks, and live street performances are included with your ticket at no extra cost.
What about accessibility for guests with disabilities?
All parks are wheelchair- and ECV-accessible, and most ride queues are as well. For guests who cannot wait in a traditional queue due to a developmental disability, Disney offers the Disability Access Service (DAS). Universal uses the IBCCES card to help guests who need accommodations.
